Collins Dictionary has named ‘vibe coding’ as its word of the year for 2025. The term, coined by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy, refers to the concept of using artificial intelligence (AI) to create apps or websites by simply describing them, rather than manually writing out complex code. This approach allows even those without coding experience to develop basic programs. ‘Vibe coding’ captures the trend of simplifying technology, offering a more accessible way for non-programmers to engage with the digital world. Although it’s still a work in progress—often with bugs and glitches—the idea of using AI to ‘feel’ the process of programming, rather than adhering to the rigid structures of traditional coding, is gaining traction. Other popular terms on Collins’ 2025 shortlist include ‘clanker,’ referring to robots, and ‘aura farming,’ describing people doing activities to look cool on camera.
