Windsurf Introduces SWE-1 AI Models to Tackle Full Software Engineering Lifecycle

On May 15, 2025, Windsurf, a startup known for creating AI tools tailored to software engineers, launched its first proprietary AI model family named SWE-1. The suite includes three models—SWE-1, SWE-1-lite, and SWE-1-mini—designed to support the complete software engineering lifecycle, not just code generation. This move marks a strategic shift for Windsurf, which has until now depended on third-party AI providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. The timing is notable, as OpenAI is reportedly finalizing a $3 billion acquisition of Windsurf.

SWE-1 is the most powerful of the models and reportedly performs on par with leading models like GPT-4.1 and Claude 3.5 Sonnet, although it falls short of the latest frontier models such as Claude 3.7. Windsurf aims to make the lite and mini versions freely available, while SWE-1 will be reserved for paying users. While pricing has not been disclosed, the startup claims SWE-1 is cheaper to operate than Claude 3.5 Sonnet.

According to Nicholas Moy, Head of Research at Windsurf, existing models focus heavily on code but miss the broader aspects of software engineering. SWE-1 was trained with a novel method emphasizing real-world programming workflows that span terminals, IDEs, and web interfaces. Windsurf sees this as a proof of concept, hinting at future AI development.
