French authorities investigate video platform Kick following streamer’s death during livestream

French prosecutors have launched an investigation into the Australian streaming platform Kick following the death of Raphaël Graven, an Australian content creator known as Jean Pormanove, who was found dead at his home near Nice last week during a livestream. Graven was popular for videos involving apparent violence and humiliation, which were part of staged performances intended to attract attention and revenue. Authorities are examining whether Kick knowingly allowed broadcasts featuring deliberate attacks on personal integrity and if the platform complied with the EU Digital Services Act, especially its duty to notify authorities when lives or safety are at risk. French Digital Affairs Minister Clara Chappaz has announced the government will sue Kick for negligence in failing to block dangerous content. An autopsy confirmed that Graven’s death was not caused by trauma or foul play, but he reportedly endured prolonged violence and sleep deprivation during streams. Local police have seized videos and interviewed those present during his death, noting Graven had denied being a victim of real violence, describing the acts as staged. Kick has expressed condolences and said it is reviewing the circumstances while emphasizing its commitment to protecting creators on its platform.
