VMware Reintroduces Free ESXi 8.0 U3e for Non-Commercial Use

VMware’s ESXi hypervisor is once again available for free, following a decision by Broadcom to reinstate the no-cost version in vSphere 8.0 Update 3e. This change comes after the controversial removal of the free ESXi license earlier in 2024, a move that caused backlash within the IT community. The free version, now accessible through the Broadcom Support portal after completing a compliance form, allows single-host usage for training and non-commercial purposes. While it lacks advanced features such as vMotion and DRS, it remains a valuable tool for learners, small businesses, and homelab enthusiasts.

Update 3e also introduces hardware improvements, such as support for CDC-NCM in the ESXi USB driver and expanded Quick Boot support for Intel and AMD technologies, enhancing compatibility with newer enterprise-grade hardware. Despite the return of the free version, users are concerned about Broadcom’s long-term intentions, as the company has shifted toward subscription models and removed perpetual licenses in the past.

Although this reinstatement is a welcome development, the lack of a clear commitment to maintaining the free offering leaves users cautious. As such, while many are pleased to see ESXi’s free edition return, they remain watchful and prepared for potential future policy changes.
