Volkswagen recalls almost 100,000 electric vehicles due to battery safety concerns
Volkswagen has announced a recall affecting nearly 100,000 electric vehicles worldwide, following battery issues that could pose safety risks. Approximately 28,000 of these vehicles are in Germany, according to the German motor vehicle authority KBA. The recall covers around 75,000 vehicles from Volkswagen’s ID. series, as well as close to 20,000 Cupra Born models manufactured between February 2022 and August 2024. Faulty high-voltage battery modules that do not meet specifications may lead to reduced driving range, and in some cases, there is a risk of fire. Volkswagen plans to address the issue by performing a software update, inspecting the high-voltage battery, and replacing individual battery modules where necessary. The issue was first reported by Germany’s Focus news outlet. Vehicle owners affected by the recall are advised to contact their local Volkswagen service centres promptly to ensure their vehicles are updated and safe. The recall highlights the ongoing challenges that manufacturers face with EV battery technology, particularly as electric vehicles become more widespread in global markets.
