Overclocking the AMD Threadripper Pro 9995WX with a BMW M4 Radiator

Geekerwan, a Chinese tech YouTuber, demonstrated the immense overclocking potential of the AMD Threadripper Pro 9995WX, a 96-core workstation processor. Priced around $13,800, this Zen 5 chip delivers an exceptional multi-core performance, almost triple that of the Ryzen 9 9950X. Geekerwan first tested the CPU in stock form, hitting 306W at 3.3-3.5 GHz all-core and achieving a Cinebench score of nearly 130,000. After enabling Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO), the score soared to 180,308, but the power consumption increased drastically to 800W. For even more performance, Geekerwan manually overclocked the CPU with a custom water-cooling system using a BMW M4’s 600×350mm intercooler radiator and two Toyota Highlander fans, pushing the CPU to 4.89 GHz across all 96 cores. However, power consumption spiked past 2,000W, tripping the PSU and overwhelming the cooling system. Despite these challenges, the Threadripper Pro 9995WX excelled in tasks like Houdini simulations and Blender rendering. Its gaming performance, however, was subpar due to inefficiencies in thread scheduling and memory latency. Geekerwan humorously tested its gaming ability without GPU drivers in GTA V, achieving around 10 FPS. This experiment highlights just how much power modern processors are capable of drawing, far beyond their official ratings.
