Waymo Suspends and Limits Robotaxi Operations Amid Planned Protests Targeting Surveillance Concerns

Alphabet-owned Waymo has reduced or suspended its autonomous vehicle services in several U.S. cities in anticipation of the nationwide ‘No Kings’ protests against President Donald Trump. The most significant suspension is in Los Angeles, where the service is entirely halted. The move follows a violent protest the previous weekend in which five Waymo vehicles were set ablaze and defaced with anti-ICE messages. These actions occurred amid growing public backlash against perceived government overreach and concerns over surveillance. Waymo vehicles may have been targeted due to their potential use in police investigations, as law enforcement agencies have previously requested access to footage recorded by the robotaxis. Although Waymo asserts it pushes back against overly broad or unjustified legal requests, the perception of its vehicles as tools of surveillance persists. The company’s decision to suspend services appears to be a preventative safety measure for its fleet and riders. The disruption affects operations in San Francisco, Austin, Atlanta, and Phoenix, with no clear timeline for service restoration. Public safety officials, including San Francisco’s fire chief, have also indicated that during unrest, their approach to vehicle fires may be limited unless property or lives are at immediate risk.
