Amazon Reveals First Images and Details of Kuiper Satellite Deployment

Amazon has released the first footage of its Kuiper broadband satellites separating in space, marking a rare moment of transparency in the company’s typically secretive satellite program. The clip, shared on social media, shows the deployment of 27 Kuiper satellites from a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket launched on April 28, 2025. Amazon had previously withheld any images of the satellites, contrasting with SpaceX and OneWeb, which publicly shared designs and technical details early in their satellite programs. The Kuiper satellites, which are trapezoidal in shape, are mounted individually and deployed in sequence, a design that differs significantly from SpaceX’s flat-stacked Starlink satellites. SpaceX’s approach allows for more efficient packing and deployment, while Amazon’s design offers flexibility and faster orbital dispersion. The estimated mass of each Kuiper satellite is between 537 and 571 kilograms. The project is led by Rajeev Badyal, a former SpaceX executive. Amazon plans to launch over 3,200 Kuiper satellites in the coming years to compete in the global broadband market. The deployment marks Amazon’s first major step toward establishing its own satellite constellation, following years of development and secrecy.
