WeTransfer clarifies it doesn’t use user files for AI training after public backlash

WeTransfer, a popular file-sharing platform, has issued a clarification stating that it does not use user-uploaded files to train artificial intelligence (AI) models, following a significant backlash from users. The controversy stemmed from recent changes to the platform’s terms of service, which some customers interpreted as granting WeTransfer the right to use uploaded files for AI training. The company emphasized that it does not employ machine learning or AI technologies to process user content, nor does it sell or share user data with third parties. The clause in question, which referred to AI usage for content moderation, was misinterpreted by many as an attempt to use their files for AI model development. In response, WeTransfer updated the terms to make the language clearer, removing any ambiguity. The revised terms now specify that users grant a royalty-free license to use their content solely for operating, developing, and improving the service. This update will take effect on August 8th for existing users. This incident follows similar clarifications from other platforms like Dropbox, which also faced criticism regarding AI training practices. Legal experts warn that terms of service changes could pose risks, particularly when AI-driven data usage is involved.
