AWS outage disrupts major websites and online services due to DNS error

Amazon Web Services (AWS), a major provider of cloud computing infrastructure, experienced a significant outage affecting over 1,000 companies and millions of internet users. The outage disrupted major social media platforms such as Snapchat and Reddit, banking services including Lloyds and Halifax, and popular games like Roblox and Fortnite. The cause was identified as a Domain Name System (DNS) error at AWS’s largest data center in North Virginia. DNS errors prevent devices from mapping requests to the correct online services, which in this case made widely used platforms temporarily inaccessible. Experts note that while these errors are common, the scale of AWS’s influence illustrates the risks of relying heavily on a single provider. Alternatives to AWS exist, such as Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform, but few can match AWS’s global reach. Smaller competitors include IBM, Alibaba, and the European service Stackit. The incident has sparked discussions on whether Europe and the UK should develop their own cloud infrastructure to reduce dependency on US providers, though opinions vary on the feasibility of such initiatives.
