How Live Shopping Is Reshaping Online Retail in the West

Live shopping, a popular e-commerce method in Asia, is gaining traction in the United States and Europe. This model allows sellers to stream live videos where they showcase and sell products in real time. Kelsey Krakora, a former bartender from Cleveland, now sells clothing full-time through platforms like Poshmark and Whatnot, hosting live shows where she moves around 100 items per session, generating approximately $1,000 per stream. This trend has parallels with traditional TV shopping channels but offers more interactivity and convenience for online users, particularly younger audiences who prefer digital platforms over cable television.

Analysts suggest that while live shopping is growing, its success may be limited due to cultural and infrastructural differences, especially when compared to markets like China where influencers known as Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) drive massive sales. Critics argue that it doesn’t scale easily and that certain products, like jeans, still benefit from in-person shopping. However, brands such as Nordstrom, Samsung, and L’Oreal are embracing it, as well as luxury firms like Amouage, which successfully launched live events in China and now in the U.S. Experts believe live shopping fosters a sense of community and immediate feedback, reshaping customer engagement and product development strategies.
