An Overview of Jack Dorsey’s Bluetooth-Based Messaging App Bitchat

Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block, launched a new free open-source messaging app called Bitchat Mesh (Bitchat) on July 28, 2025. Unlike typical messaging apps, Bitchat does not rely on internet, Wi-Fi, or cellular data; instead, it uses a Bluetooth mesh network to connect nearby devices. This enables users to send messages through a decentralized, peer-to-peer network extended by devices within physical proximity. The app has a minimalist design without traditional contact-based connections, and communication is limited to users within the same mesh network. Bitchat supports both group messages visible to all network participants and private messages between individual users. Its lightweight features include options to block users or send playful interactions such as hugs or slaps, generating in-chat notifications for transparency, including alerts when screenshots are taken. Although Bitchat’s source code is open for inspection, it has yet to undergo an external third-party security audit. Dorsey implemented the Noise Protocol Framework for end-to-end encryption after a reported vulnerability, but he cautions users against relying on the app’s security until it is fully reviewed. Currently, Bitchat is best suited for local communication in settings like festivals or large gatherings, with the potential for extended range if adoption increases. Users are advised to use the app cautiously and await further security validation.
