Uncertainty Surrounds TikTok’s Future in the US as Deadline Approaches
TikTok’s future in the United States remains uncertain as the deadline for a potential sale of its US operations looms. Despite repeated delays, the US government has insisted on a sale or ban due to concerns over national security, citing the app’s ties to its Chinese owner, ByteDance. President Donald Trump had initially set a deadline for December 2020, which was later extended to January 2026. Investor Frank McCourt, who is part of a group interested in purchasing TikTok’s US operations, stated they are prepared to move forward if the deal materializes. However, the Trump administration’s claims of a completed deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping have not been substantiated, and ByteDance has yet to announce any formal agreement. Concerns about the concentration of power and influence in the hands of a few investors, including McCourt, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, and investor Kevin O’Leary, are also raised. McCourt aims to operate TikTok without Chinese technology and would prefer to see the app sold to those who comply with US law. The ongoing uncertainty has left investors and users waiting for clarity on TikTok’s future in the US.
