WhatsApp Launches Incognito Chat Feature for Private Conversations with Meta AI

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called Incognito Chat, designed to let users interact with Meta AI while maintaining strong privacy protections. The chats leverage WhatsApp’s Private Processing system, which ensures that Meta cannot access the content of user conversations with the AI. This addresses concerns about balancing advanced AI capabilities with the platform’s longstanding commitment to end-to-end encryption. Unlike typical incognito modes on other AI platforms that primarily separate user data from training models, WhatsApp’s approach aims to prevent even Meta from viewing the exchanges. Conversations are ephemeral by default, disappearing after the session ends, and processing occurs within Trusted Execution Environments in Meta’s secure cloud infrastructure. Meta is inviting third-party audits to verify the system’s security. The rollout also includes a Side Chat feature, allowing users to consult Meta AI about ongoing group or individual chats without sharing sensitive context directly with the AI provider. Additional capabilities like image processing and voice recognition are planned for the future. WhatsApp head Will Cathcart emphasized the challenge of providing powerful AI while preserving privacy, likening it to running a highly secure remote environment. With over 3 billion users, this privacy-focused AI integration could bring secure AI interactions to a massive audience. Experts like cryptographer Matt Green have expressed confidence in the technical approach, though they note that any cloud-based system carries inherent risks and remains a potential target for sophisticated attacks. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted the feature as a step toward private AI, distinguishing it from competitors that retain conversation logs on servers.
