WhatsApp to Launch Optional Private Processing for AI Features with Enhanced Cloud Privacy

Meta has announced a new privacy-focused feature for WhatsApp called ‘Private Processing,’ aimed at allowing users to interact with Meta AI in a secure and confidential manner. This feature, which will be rolled out in the coming weeks, is entirely optional and ensures that neither Meta, WhatsApp, nor any third parties can access the content of interactions processed through it. Private Processing is designed to support AI-powered functionalities like chat summarization and writing suggestions while maintaining WhatsApp’s core privacy promises. The system works by processing requests in a confidential virtual machine on Meta’s servers, using encryption and anonymization techniques such as Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) to mask user identities and IP addresses. Once an AI session is complete, no user data or messages are retained, reducing the risk of post-session breaches. Meta is also inviting independent third-party audits and including Private Processing in its bug bounty program to reinforce transparency and security. This approach is similar to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, though WhatsApp’s AI requests are always handled on Meta’s servers and require user initiation. The move addresses concerns about privacy when using AI features in messaging apps, aiming to balance advanced AI capabilities with robust user privacy protections.
