WhatsApp Introduces New Advertising Features in Updates Tab While Keeping Chats Private

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is launching three new advertising features globally in its messaging app, focusing ads exclusively in a new section called Updates, separate from private chats. The platform will not use encrypted message content to target ads but will rely on user location, language, and interaction with ads and channels. Users linking their WhatsApp accounts to Facebook or Instagram will see more personalized ads. Businesses can promote themselves through ads in the Updates tab and charge subscriptions for exclusive content, with WhatsApp taking a 10% commission. Ads will also appear as status updates resembling Instagram Stories, which can link to chats. Meta aims to monetize WhatsApp without compromising user privacy, emphasizing that personal messages remain encrypted and ad-free. The move aligns WhatsApp more closely with Meta’s other platforms and reflects a broader social media trend towards private messaging and stories. However, this shift may face resistance in markets like the UK and Europe, where users prefer WhatsApp primarily as a messaging tool without ads or content feeds. WhatsApp leadership assures users that those who use the app solely for messaging will not see ads, and the new features will roll out gradually worldwide.
