Airbus Issues Major A320 Recall Affecting Global Airlines

Airbus has issued an unprecedented recall affecting 6,000 A320 aircraft, which represents more than half of the global A320 fleet. This recall comes after an incident where solar radiation was found to potentially corrupt critical flight control data. Most affected aircraft will undergo a software rollback, causing short groundings, but hundreds may require hardware replacements, potentially resulting in longer delays. Key airlines affected include American Airlines, which has 340 of its 480 A320 planes needing updates; Avianca, with over 70% of its fleet impacted; and Delta, Lufthansa, British Airways, Wizz Air, EasyJet, Air India, and IndiGo, all of which are implementing software and hardware updates. British Airways reported minimal operational impact, while Avianca anticipates significant disruptions and has temporarily suspended ticket sales until 8 December. Brazil’s Azul Airlines confirmed its fleet is unaffected. The recall highlights the challenges of maintaining safety in a globally operating aircraft fleet and emphasizes airlines’ need to quickly comply with manufacturer directives to minimize passenger disruption.
