Offshore Floating Data Centers Powered by Wind Energy Could Address AI Energy Challenges

With the growing energy demands of AI data centers, some innovators have considered placing servers in space to access continuous solar power. However, a startup called Aikido is pursuing a more practical approach by situating data centers offshore. This year, Aikido plans to deploy a 100-kilowatt demonstration data center submerged within the floating pods of an offshore wind turbine off the coast of Norway. If successful, a larger-scale project is expected by 2028 near the UK, featuring a 15–18 megawatt turbine powering a 10–12 megawatt data center. Offshore placement provides consistent wind power, proximity to energy generation, and simplified cooling through cold seawater. It also mitigates local opposition from communities concerned about noise and pollution. Nevertheless, challenges include the corrosive nature of seawater and the need for secure, stationary placement of submerged equipment. While not a new idea—Microsoft conducted a submerged data center experiment off Scotland in 2018 with minimal server failures—Aikido aims to build on these lessons with more robust offshore technology. This approach could offer a sustainable, efficient solution for powering AI infrastructure without resorting to the complexities of space-based data centers.
