Cluely’s Controversial Marketing Strategy Gets Backing from a16z VC Firm

Cluely, a startup that recently raised $15 million in a Series A round from Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), has sparked controversy due to its marketing approach and product concept. The company is known for promoting a product that helps users ‘cheat’ in various ways, which has garnered significant attention, though some criticize it for its controversial nature. Cluely’s founder, Roy Lee, argues that its success lies in viral, rage-bait content that grabs attention in a crowded AI space. Despite only launching in April with minimal product functionality, Cluely has generated immense buzz and viral success on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn. a16z partner Bryan Kim sees Cluely’s approach as a prime example of the importance of speed and momentum in AI startups. Kim believes that quick market penetration and attention are more important than building the perfect product, especially when competitors like OpenAI can quickly integrate new features. Kim’s ‘momentum is the moat’ theory is embodied in Cluely’s strategy, where marketing itself becomes a key part of the product’s success. Lee believes this marketing will create even more excitement once the product officially launches. The official debut of Cluely’s product is expected on June 27, 2025.
