Cluely’s Roy Lee Discusses the Impact of Cheating Detection Technology

Cluely, an AI startup co-founded by Roy Lee, has become infamous for its claim that its software helps users cheat undetected during online activities. Lee’s controversial boasting about using Cluely during a coding interview at Amazon led to his suspension from Columbia University. However, a new competitor, Truely, developed by a Columbia student, claims to detect cheaters using Cluely. Despite this, Lee is unconcerned, stating that the ‘invisibility’ feature of Cluely is a minor add-on, and many users disable it due to legal concerns. Lee also emphasized that Cluely’s true purpose is to provide a more intuitive and advanced alternative to tools like ChatGPT, offering both conversational capabilities and the ability to analyze on-screen data and audio. Cluely has recently shifted its branding to move away from promoting cheating, with a new slogan that reflects its broader ambitions. The startup secured $15 million in a Series A funding round and aims to compete with ChatGPT in the AI space.
