Hims & Hers Appoints Former Cruise CTO to Lead AI-Driven Healthcare Innovation

Hims & Hers, a San Francisco-based telehealth and wellness company, has appointed Mo Elshenawy, former president and CTO of autonomous vehicle company Cruise, as its new chief technology officer. This strategic hire follows the shutdown of Cruise’s autonomous vehicle program by General Motors earlier this year. CEO Andrew Dudum explained that the company specifically sought leadership from the autonomous driving sector due to its expertise in applying AI and data in high-stakes, safety-critical environments. Elshenawy, who holds over 10 patents in AI, robotics, and autonomous vehicles, emphasized the parallels between autonomous vehicles and healthcare, noting both industries require real-time, reliable decision-making under strict regulatory oversight. Hims & Hers, which went public in 2021 and has expanded from men’s health products to a broader suite including women’s health, mental health, and weight loss treatments, is leveraging its vast anonymized patient data to build AI models that support clinical decision-making. The company already uses AI tools like MedMatch to help doctors recommend treatments, but maintains a ‘human in the loop’ approach to ensure regulatory compliance and clinical oversight. Recent executive hires, including a former Amazon operations leader, reflect the company’s ambition to scale its AI-driven healthcare services. Dudum highlighted the importance of transparency in AI recommendations, ensuring providers understand the reasoning behind AI-generated insights.
