Lithuania’s Growing Space-Tech Ambitions: Innovation in Laser Communications and Satellite Navigation

Lithuania, a small country with a rising presence in space technology, is investing heavily in innovative space solutions such as laser communications and autonomous satellite navigation. Astrolight, a Lithuanian start-up, has raised €2.8 million to develop an ‘optical data highway’ designed to link satellites to Earth using faster and more secure laser technology. This technology has military applications as well, particularly in NATO defense operations, where it’s used for secure communication in high-stakes situations. Alongside Astrolight, Blackswan Space is developing a system for autonomous satellite navigation, which could reshape how satellites are managed. Despite a limited defense budget, Lithuania spends a large portion of its GDP on defense, with a focus on space tech’s dual-use potential for both civilian and military applications. The government is aware of the need for continued investment in space tech, not just for defense, but to bolster Lithuania’s global position. As Lithuania strives to demonstrate its technological capabilities, space innovation becomes a key pillar of its national strategy.
