Onyx Raises $10M Seed to Disrupt Enterprise Search with Open Source Solution
Onyx, a San Francisco-based startup, is aiming to revolutionize enterprise search with its open-source solution. Addressing the challenge of locating internal data within organizations, Onyx provides a tool that connects to over 40 data sources, including Salesforce, GitHub, and Google Drive, and is deployable in just 30 minutes. Founded by Chris Weaver and Yuhong Sun, Onyx differentiates itself from competitors like Glean by offering an open-source platform, allowing companies to experiment and customize the solution. This approach has attracted enterprises like Netflix, Ramp, and Thales Group. The founders previously worked on others startups before creating Onyx, originally named Danswer. The company’s success is attributed to its open-source model, which bypasses lengthy enterprise sales cycles. Recently, Onyx secured a $10 million seed round led by Khosla Ventures and First Round Capital, with participation from Y Combinator and angel investors such as Gokul Rajaram (Coinbase, Pinterest), Arash Ferdowsi (Dropbox), and Amit Agarwal (Datadog). The funding will be used to expand the team and develop premium features. Onyx reports significant user growth, with a peak of over 160,000 messages in a single week, and envisions its solution becoming a foundational tool for internal search across businesses worldwide.
