Wi-Fi 8, expected to be finalized by 2028, will shift the focus from increasing speed to enhancing reliability and responsiveness in wireless connections. Unlike Wi-Fi 7, which boosted maximum data rates from 2.4Gbps to 5.8Gbps, Wi-Fi 8 aims at providing ultra-high reliability to support the growing demand for AI-based and real-time applications. This includes targets such as 25% higher throughput in challenging conditions, 25% lower latency, and 25% fewer dropped packets, especially when roaming between access points. Key innovations include seamless device mobility across access points, expanded coverage range, and improved performance in high-density environments like apartments or airports through multi-access point coordination. Qualcomm highlights the importance of reliable, low-latency Wi-Fi for personal device ecosystems such as augmented reality glasses and wearable tech, which rely on continuous connectivity for real-time AI inference. For current users, upgrading to mesh Wi-Fi systems, prioritizing router traffic, buying personal routers, and optimizing router placement can improve Wi-Fi experience before Wi-Fi 8 becomes available.
