Agrivoltaics: The Future of Farming and Solar Energy in India

In India, where unpredictable weather can devastate crops, the idea of placing solar panels above fields is gaining traction. This innovative concept, known as agrivoltaics, allows farmers to continue their agricultural activities while generating renewable energy. Harpal Dagar, a farmer near Delhi, entered a 25-year agreement with Sun Master, a solar power company, to install solar panels above his turmeric fields. This arrangement has significantly increased his income, with Dagar now earning about $1,200 per acre annually and an additional $170 for maintaining the solar panels. Despite the success, agrivoltaics faces challenges in India, including the high cost of installation and crop limitations. Solar panels need to be elevated at least 11 feet to allow farming beneath, making the system 20-30% more expensive than regular solar farms. Furthermore, not all crops thrive under the reduced light levels, with high-value crops like turmeric, ginger, and leafy vegetables performing best. While agrivoltaics offers benefits like reducing irrigation needs and providing a stable income, the approach is still in its infancy in India, with around 40 projects currently operational. If scaled, agrivoltaics could transform farming, especially in climate-vulnerable regions, but the industry needs clear contracts and government support for long-term success.
