How the US TikTok Deal Could Change the Platform’s Algorithm and Relevance
TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, has entered into an agreement with investors to manage its business operations in the US. This move has raised questions about what changes American users might experience on the platform, especially when it comes to TikTok’s recommendation algorithm. The deal will see Oracle license the algorithm, retraining it using data solely from American users. Social media expert Matt Navarra noted that this could make the platform feel safer and more stable, but also less relevant, as TikTok’s power comes from its unpredictability and ability to surface niche, often edgy content. A more controlled algorithm could limit this spontaneity. Additionally, while core features like short videos and shopping may remain intact, the changes could be more gradual and may cause the US version of TikTok to lag in personalization compared to its international counterpart. Some experts also worry that these changes could make TikTok less of a place for creative experimentation and more of a platform for conforming behavior. The shift is being backed by US investors, including Oracle and private equity firms, raising concerns that the platform’s cultural edge could be diminished as a result.
