Microsoft Develops Cross-Device Resume Feature for Windows 11

Microsoft is introducing a new feature in Windows 11 called ‘Cross Device Resume’, aimed at enhancing user experience across devices. Inspired by Apple’s Handoff functionality in macOS, this feature will allow users to seamlessly continue tasks between their phone and PC. It was demonstrated at Microsoft Build 2025 during a session for developers, although the specific demo was later removed. The demo showed the Spotify app on a mobile device being resumed on a PC at the exact point where it was left off, with a taskbar badge serving as a visual cue. Aakash Varshney, senior product manager at Microsoft, explained that this badge appears on the taskbar icon and enables instant resume by simply clicking it. The transition is meant to be smooth and uninterrupted, avoiding the need to search or reopen content manually. The concept stems from an earlier project called ‘Project Rome’, introduced in 2016 with a similar objective, but which saw limited adoption. Microsoft hopes the refined Cross Device Resume will achieve broader developer support and user integration. This innovation is part of a broader effort to create fluid and consistent experiences as users switch between devices, especially in an increasingly mobile and multi-platform environment.
