Q-CTRL Demonstrates GPS-Free Quantum Navigation with 10x Accuracy Improvement at Sea
Q-CTRL, an Australian quantum software company, has successfully demonstrated GPS-free navigation at sea during trials in the Coral Sea. Using quantum sensors, the company achieved ten times the accuracy of conventional satellite-based navigation systems while maintaining one nautical mile positioning precision. This breakthrough addresses critical vulnerabilities in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), which are increasingly targeted by electronic warfare through jamming and spoofing. Quantum sensors measure gravitational or magnetic fields instead of relying on satellite signals, making them inherently resistant to hacking. The system, installed in a ship’s passenger cabin, operated autonomously without specialized hardware, marking a significant step toward resilient navigation for maritime and defense applications.
