X Tests Community Notes to Identify Well-Liked Posts Across Different Perspectives

Elon Musk’s X platform is experimenting with using its Community Notes system, typically reserved for fact-checking, to highlight posts that receive widespread approval from users with different viewpoints. This new experiment, launched on July 24, 2025, introduces a method where Community Notes contributors can rate posts based on whether they agree or disagree with the content. Unlike the traditional upvoting/downvoting methods, which could be easily manipulated, Community Notes uses a ‘bridging algorithm’ to find consensus among users who hold differing opinions. This mechanism ensures that a fact-check or rating is only published if it reflects agreement from a diverse set of contributors. The new pilot aims to uncover posts that resonate broadly across different perspectives, showcasing what truly engages users. This initiative is a response to critiques that X’s existing system has struggled to combat misinformation. By allowing contributors to evaluate well-liked posts, X hopes to identify content that transcends ideological divides. The company is approaching this as a public experiment and plans to iterate on the feedback received from the small group of pilot users. The project also reflects a broader trend in social media, where platforms are seeking more transparent and inclusive ways of engaging users.
