X experiences second outage in just over a week, affecting core features
On May 30, 2025, Elon Musk’s social media platform X encountered a significant outage, marking its second major disruption in just over a week. Users began experiencing issues just before 4 p.m. ET, reporting problems such as the algorithmic ‘For You’ feed failing to load, broken image loading, non-functional banking service XMoney, empty timelines, publishing errors, and a non-responsive search feature. Although the X website and app were still accessible, their core features were severely impaired. Crowdsourced outage tracking platform Downdetector saw a spike in user reports, and frustrated users shared their experiences on other platforms such as Bluesky and Threads. This outage follows a similar incident on May 22, when the platform suffered a 24-hour period of instability. While the most recent outage appeared to be resolving at the time of writing, with some features intermittently functioning, the X Developer API v2 was still marked as degraded. Interestingly, the disruption occurred shortly after X began beta testing its new direct messaging feature, XChat, which replaced its previously paused encrypted DMs. However, it is unclear if this rollout contributed to the system instability. Since Musk’s takeover, X has stopped responding to press inquiries, leaving many questions unanswered about the platform’s reliability and internal technical health.
