4chan Returns After Hack and Financial Struggles

After nearly two weeks offline following a cyberattack, the controversial image-sharing platform 4chan has partially resumed operations. The hack, which occurred on April 14, 2025, exposed sensitive data including the identities of moderators and janitors. The attackers exploited a vulnerability via a bogus PDF upload, leading to significant damage and the leakage of source code and database information. 4chan’s team cited years of financial hardship and the lack of skilled resources as contributing factors to the breach, blaming pressure campaigns that scared away advertisers and payment processors. Although the breached server was replaced and the platform is operational again, certain functionalities like PDF uploads and Flash animation boards remain disabled to prevent further vulnerabilities. Despite these setbacks, 4chan affirmed its commitment to continue operating, insisting that no other site can replace its unique community.
