Armenia’s Strategy to Develop a Thriving Tech Industry in the Caucasus
Armenia is investing heavily in tech education and entrepreneurship to position itself as a technological powerhouse in the Caucasus. The Armath program, launched in 2014, teaches children skills like programming and robotics early on, with over 650 labs nationwide and 17,000 students. Private sector investment, combined with government support, has bolstered this effort. The country’s Soviet-era legacy in computer science and mathematics is being revived, producing global successes like Picsart and Service Titan. Armenia’s large diaspora, particularly in the US tech industry, is crucial in supporting startups to expand abroad. Additionally, the influx of Russian IT professionals after the Ukraine invasion has filled key skill gaps. Venture capital firms like SmartGate help Armenian startups build US connections. Despite challenges like high costs and tax burdens, optimism remains high that Armenia can become a major tech hub in the region.
