Pakistan to Begin 5G Pilot in Major Cities as 4G Services Improve

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is all set to take a big step in its digital journey as IT Minister Shaza Fatima announced that 5G pilot services will commence next week in major cities. Speaking at a ceremony for the release of 480 MHz spectrum to Jazz, Ufone, and Zong, the minister highlighted that Pakistan’s total spectrum has now exceeded 7,500 MHz, tripling the network capacity. The telecom companies confirmed that they have already started testing 5G services in various areas and praised the transparency of the auction process. Additionally, the government is planning to establish an AI Council to guide policies and responsible development of artificial intelligence in the country, part of broader efforts to boost Pakistan’s digital economy and technological innovation. Minister Fatima also mentioned that policies for purchasing smart mobile devices on installment plans will be introduced soon, which will help more people access smartphones. Local mobile phone manufacturing is also increasing, reflecting growth in the sector. The minister emphasised that internet access is a basic need, with three new submarine cables enhancing connectivity. While the IT Ministry and PTA have advocated for lower mobile taxes, the final decision rests with the Federal Board of Revenue. The spectrum auction raised $510 million (around Rs142 billion), according to PTA Chairman retired Major General Hafeez-ur-Rehman.
