China Unveils ‘Hurricane 3000’ Microwave Defense System to Counter Drone Swarms

China has introduced a new high-power microwave defense system named Hurricane 3000, developed by the state-owned company Norinco. The system is designed to neutralize large groups of drones at distances exceeding 3 kilometers, surpassing the effective range of the similar American Leonidas system, which covers up to 2 kilometers. Mounted on a truck, the Hurricane 3000 extends the concept of point defense to area denial, making it suitable for protecting larger zones against drone incursions.

Equipped with radar and electro-optical sensors, the system can autonomously detect, track, and disable drones by emitting powerful microwave bursts that disrupt their electronic components. Norinco claims that the Hurricane 3000 can operate independently or in coordination with laser and artillery systems, forming part of a layered air-defense structure that also includes missiles and laser weapons. The system’s low cost per shot and wide area coverage make it particularly effective against saturation attacks involving multiple drones at once.

According to the manufacturer, this technology has additional applications beyond drone defense. It could interfere with enemy communications, hinder electronic reconnaissance, neutralize precision-guided munitions, and even act as a non-lethal system for crowd control. Compared to missile-based or laser-based defenses, high-power microwave weapons offer an almost unlimited ammunition capacity due to their energy-based firing mechanism, while also minimizing collateral damage. This development underscores China’s growing investment in directed-energy weapons and integrated air-defense technologies.
