China commissions the world’s first 20 MW offshore wind turbine in Fujian waters

China has achieved a major milestone in renewable energy with the successful installation of the world’s first 20-megawatt offshore wind turbine off the coast of Fujian Province. Developed by China Three Gorges Corporation, one of the country’s largest energy companies, the turbine represents a remarkable step forward in offshore engineering and the use of clean, domestically produced technology. The turbine’s massive structure is anchored more than 30 kilometers from shore, in deep waters where construction teams faced challenges from strong monsoon winds, unpredictable weather, and the difficulty of operating at great heights. To manage these conditions, engineers employed a heavy-lift vessel capable of raising 2,000 tonnes and used advanced positioning systems to install the three blades, each nearly 150 meters long, connecting them precisely to a hub positioned at 174 meters above sea level. The turbine is over 20 percent lighter per megawatt than the global industry average, enabling a lower-cost foundation and easier deployment at sea. Once operational, it will generate more than 80 million kilowatt-hours of electricity every year—enough to supply about 44,000 homes. Environmentally, each turbine of this scale could replace roughly 24,000 tonnes of coal annually and prevent the emission of about 64,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, making it a flagship project in China’s push toward energy independence and carbon neutrality.
