Negotiations Over TikTok’s US Operations: What’s at Stake for China?
A much-anticipated deal regarding TikTok’s operations in the United States could be nearing a conclusion, with US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled to discuss terms. Both nations have reportedly agreed on a framework where TikTok’s US operations could be sold to American firms like Oracle and investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and Silver Lake. This agreement aims to resolve ongoing tensions and concerns over national security and data privacy. However, there are key issues yet to be addressed, including the handling of TikTok’s valuable algorithm. While China may allow ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to license the algorithm, it will not be fully transferred, giving China an edge over future technological ventures. The deal is seen as a way for Beijing to export Chinese tech in a controlled manner, strengthening its leverage in future trade negotiations. At the same time, concerns persist in the US about maintaining separation from Chinese influence, which complicates the negotiations. This deal, if finalized, could be a significant milestone in US-China relations, but its practical implications remain uncertain.
