New US-Only Version of TikTok Set to Launch in September

A new version of TikTok tailored for US users is reportedly in the works by ByteDance, the app’s parent company. This new version, codenamed ‘M2,’ will be released on September 5, 2025, and will replace the current TikTok app for users in the United States. The move comes as part of a broader effort by ByteDance to comply with US regulations, including a deadline to divest ownership of TikTok’s US operations. The decision also stems from Apple App Store restrictions, which do not allow regional variations of the same app to appear under the same listing. According to sources, users will have a grace period until March 2026 to switch to the new app. However, the change might raise concerns for creators and businesses that rely heavily on TikTok. There is also uncertainty about whether the new app will introduce significant features or limit content to US-based users. This development follows a long-standing controversy over TikTok’s ownership and security concerns, with the US government pushing for the sale of TikTok’s US assets to a group of ‘very, very wealthy people,’ according to President Donald Trump.
