Amazon Implements Senior Engineer Approval for AI-Assisted Changes Following System Outages

Amazon recently held a major meeting with its engineering teams to address a series of website and infrastructure outages. The company identified a pattern of incidents that involved changes assisted by AI tools, which sometimes had widespread impacts. A briefing note reviewed by the Financial Times highlighted that the use of generative AI (GenAI) for coding introduced risks for which established best practices and safeguards are not yet fully developed. Dave Treadwell, Amazon’s senior vice-president and former Microsoft executive, communicated to employees that the recent site availability issues were concerning and required focused attention. To prevent similar outages in the future, Amazon is now requiring that junior and mid-level engineers obtain approval from senior engineers before implementing any AI-assisted changes. The decision will be discussed during the company’s regular weekly operations meeting, ‘This Week in Stores Tech’ (TWiST), which will focus on both understanding past incidents and introducing short-term initiatives aimed at improving system reliability. Amazon emphasized that reviewing website availability and implementing safeguards is part of normal operations and an ongoing effort to enhance performance.
