This AI plugin is capable of automating routine knowledge work—like contract reviews, regulatory compliance tracking, sales forecasting—which forms the backbone of Indian IT outsourcing. The sudden market reaction reflects growing concerns that companies abroad might increasingly use AI rather than outsourcing to Indian firms, posing a significant challenge to the ‘back office of the world’ model. Indian IT companies, which have relied on low-cost labour in cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune, are now facing pressure to adapt. Experts warn that repetitive, junior-level roles are most at risk, and some mid-level positions could become redundant within the next decade. Leading firms such as TCS and Infosys have already begun integrating AI into their operations, training hundreds of thousands of employees and generating new AI services revenue. Analysts note that AI will not eliminate the entire sector but will act as a filter: companies that innovate quickly will continue to thrive, while those that do not may struggle.
