The Current Challenges and Future of AI Agents in DeFi
AI agents in Web3 and DeFi were once hailed as the next revolutionary step, expected to manage decentralized assets more effectively than humans. Bold predictions forecasted widespread adoption within a year, but real-world progress has been much slower. Instead of full autonomy, current AI agents often only operate as tokenized profiles, highlighting the gap between vision and reality. Foundational projects like Giza, Axal, and Theoriq are working on infrastructure to bring about true agent-based DeFi, focusing on verifiable actions, execution integrity, and decentralized intelligence. However, fragmentation and inefficient coordination between agents remain major hurdles. The field is maturing as projects begin solving different parts of the same complex problem rather than duplicating efforts. Experts agree the main bottleneck is not the intelligence of the AI agents but the lack of modular, secure, and efficient infrastructure. Innovations in vault frameworks, liquidity monitoring, and risk assessment are seen as crucial next steps. While the vision of AI agents autonomously managing DeFi activities remains achievable, it demands building more robust and interconnected systems first.
