Amazon’s Automation Plan Could Replace Over 600,000 US Jobs by 2033

Amazon is reportedly advancing plans to replace more than 600,000 jobs in the U.S. with automation, according to internal documents and interviews cited by The New York Times. By 2033, Amazon aims to automate 75% of its operations, cutting out roles that would otherwise be needed, particularly in warehousing and delivery. The company expects to save $12.6 billion from 2025 to 2027, and the automation could reduce the cost of each product by about 30 cents. Despite this, Amazon has denied that these leaked plans represent its official hiring strategy, emphasizing that it continues to hire for positions across the U.S. and will fill 250,000 jobs for the upcoming holiday season. While Amazon acknowledges the potential backlash regarding job loss, the company is reportedly exploring softer language to frame its robotics efforts, such as using terms like ‘advanced technology’ and ‘cobots’ for robots working alongside humans. However, experts warn that Amazon’s move could set a precedent, turning one of the largest employers in the U.S. into a ‘net job destroyer’ if it successfully achieves these automation goals.
