Android 16 Brings Material 3 Design, Live Notifications, and Enhanced Hearing Aid Support to Pixel Phones
Android 16 is now being officially rolled out to supported Google Pixel devices, marking one of the earliest major Android OS releases in recent years. This new version introduces a foundation for the Material 3 Expressive design, aimed at simplifying user interaction and boosting accessibility.
Among its standout features, Android 16 introduces real-time live notifications for compatible apps, including food delivery and ride-sharing services, which can now be monitored directly from the lock screen or notification shade. Notifications are also more organized, as they are automatically grouped by app to reduce screen clutter.
A significant accessibility upgrade includes better support for LE Audio hearing aids. Users can now use their phone’s microphone instead of the hearing aid’s for clearer audio in noisy environments. Android 16 also integrates native hearing aid controls directly into the OS.
Security is also enhanced through the new Advanced Protection mode, which offers strong defenses against phishing, scam calls, malicious apps, and other threats with just one tap.
For tablet users, a new desktop-style windowing system, developed in collaboration with Samsung, allows multiple apps to be resized and moved like on a traditional PC. Additional features like external display support and custom keyboard shortcuts are expected later this year.
Google also hinted at more features in the coming months, including HDR screenshots, adaptive refresh rates, identity tools, and Wear OS 6 updates. Samsung is already rolling out a beta version of its One UI 8, based on Android 16, for the Galaxy S25 series in selected regions.
