Apple Enables FaceTime Access for Android and PC Users via Web Link

Apple has extended FaceTime accessibility to Android and Windows users by allowing them to join calls through a web browser, a feature introduced in 2021. This update marks a step toward increased interoperability, although key features like iMessage remain exclusive to Apple’s ecosystem. Android or PC users can now participate in FaceTime calls, provided an iPhone, iPad, or Mac user initiates the call and shares a unique FaceTime link. To join, users need to click the link in a supported browser like Chrome or Edge, enter their name, and wait for the host to grant access. Despite the new accessibility, Android and PC users still cannot start FaceTime calls themselves. Apple’s decision to allow limited cross-platform integration demonstrates a strategic shift, aiming to improve the communication experience between iOS and non-iOS users while still maintaining control over its proprietary services. Additionally, Apple announced support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) in iOS 18, further enhancing text messaging compatibility between iPhones and Android devices. This move, however, does not eliminate the visual differentiation between blue and green bubbles in messages. Although FaceTime now works across platforms, alternative video call apps like Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams remain more versatile for Android users.
