Apple Moves iPhone 17 Production to India to Avoid Tariffs
Apple is shifting its iPhone 17 production entirely to India, with manufacturing taking place at five factories across the country, as part of its strategy to reduce the impact of tariffs on products made in China. This move, confirmed by a Bloomberg report, marks a significant change for the company. India will now be the production hub for all four iPhone 17 models ahead of their September release. Tata Group and Taiwan’s Foxconn are handling the bulk of the manufacturing, with Foxconn focusing its efforts near the Bangalore airport. The decision to move production comes as the company aims to circumvent the tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, which affect goods manufactured in China. Apple has already seen a rise in exports from India, with production there increasing by 63% to $7.5 billion in Q2 2025. The shift marks a turning point in global smartphone manufacturing, according to analysts, although China will remain central for Apple’s flagship models. Despite the move, China will continue to be the dominant source for iPhones destined for non-U.S. markets. Apple is not abandoning China, but diversifying its supply chain to mitigate risks, with India emerging as the most significant alternative manufacturing base.
