Apple Criticizes EU’s Digital Markets Act as a Threat to Innovation and User Experience
Apple has ramped up its criticism of European regulators, claiming that the Digital Markets Act (DMA) is an unfair challenge to its ‘closed ecosystem.’ Apple executives argue that their tightly integrated product experience—what they call the ‘walled garden’—provides a high-quality, safe environment for users. The company is particularly concerned about EU regulations that would require its devices, like headphones, to be compatible with non-Apple products. Apple also faces a €500 million fine for alleged anti-competitive practices in its App Store, part of the EU’s broader crackdown on tech giants. As part of the DMA, the EU is pushing Apple to allow interoperability with third-party smartwatches, including notifications on Apple devices and better cross-platform sharing. Apple has strongly resisted these rules, arguing that they would undermine its ability to provide a ‘magical’ user experience. The company’s newest product, the AirPods Pro 3, has rolled out new features like ‘Live Translation,’ but these features are not available in Europe due to regulatory concerns. Apple claims that opening its ecosystem would compromise user privacy, security, and overall product quality. The company has also publicly warned the UK against adopting similar regulations. While Apple remains vocal, it faces ongoing legal battles in Europe over anti-competitive behavior and its ecosystem control.
