Apple’s AI Strategy: Why Acquiring Perplexity Could Be Key to Closing the Gap

Apple has been under pressure to make significant strides in artificial intelligence (AI), especially as it lags behind major competitors like Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft. According to Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives, acquiring Perplexity AI, a startup focused on AI search engines, is a crucial step for Apple to enhance its AI capabilities. Perplexity, valued at $14 billion in its latest funding round, offers impressive AI algorithms that could bolster Apple’s strategy in this rapidly evolving tech space. Ives suggests that while Apple has historically been cautious about large acquisitions, this particular deal would be a ‘no-brainer’ to secure AI talent and technology, especially as Apple struggles to build AI systems in-house. The potential cost of $30 billion is considered a small price relative to the long-term value that AI could bring to Apple. As of now, Apple’s stock is facing a consolidation period, trading below its 200-day moving average. Meanwhile, analysts from LightShed Partners argue that the company’s current CEO, Tim Cook, may not be the right leader to guide Apple through the AI race, advocating for a more product-focused approach. The overall sentiment suggests that Apple must act soon to avoid falling further behind in the AI revolution.
