Baidu Introduces Ernie 4.5 and Ernie X1, Enhancing AI Capabilities
Chinese tech giant Baidu has unveiled two new artificial intelligence models: Ernie 4.5, an upgraded version of its foundational AI, and Ernie X1, a new reasoning model. According to Baidu, Ernie X1 matches the performance of DeepSeek R1 at half the cost. Meanwhile, Ernie 4.5 is touted for its high emotional intelligence, allowing it to interpret memes and satire effectively. Both models support multimodal functionalities, processing text, images, video, and audio.
While Baidu was among the first Chinese companies to introduce an AI model to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, it has struggled to achieve widespread market adoption. Meanwhile, DeepSeek has gained attention for offering powerful AI models at significantly lower costs, raising concerns among American AI firms and investors.
Baidu has announced plans to release Ernie 5 later this year, further enhancing multimodal capabilities. This development signals the ongoing AI race between major tech companies, particularly as Chinese firms seek to establish themselves in the global AI market. The competition between Baidu and DeepSeek highlights a growing trend of cost-effective yet advanced AI models emerging from China.
