Self-Driving Tesla Fails to Recognize Painted Wall, Raising Concerns Before Robotaxi Launch

In a recent test conducted by former NASA engineer and YouTuber Mark Rober, a self-driving Tesla Model Y failed to distinguish between a real road and a wall painted to look like one, resulting in a crash at full speed. The test, inspired by the classic Looney Tunes gag, was a direct comparison between Tesla’s camera-based autonomous system and a LiDAR-equipped Lexus. While the Tesla misidentified the painted road and collided, the LiDAR system successfully recognized the wall as a solid object and stopped in time.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns with Tesla’s reliance on camera-based self-driving technology, especially with the company planning to launch an unsupervised Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, in less than three months. Researchers have been studying this issue since 2021, identifying that autonomous vehicles struggle to differentiate between real roadways and images of roads on murals, billboards, or truck surfaces.

With the upcoming launch of Tesla’s driverless ride-hailing service, this test raises serious questions about the safety and reliability of its technology. If Tesla does not address these limitations, its self-driving system could pose significant risks in urban environments, particularly in areas with misleading visual elements.
