Designers Assess Apple’s Liquid Glass UI: Aesthetic Appeal vs. Readability Concerns

Apple has introduced a major redesign across its platforms with the new Liquid Glass user interface, first unveiled at WWDC 2025. The update, now available to developers and coming soon to public beta, brings a frosted glass effect to app icons, buttons, menus, and pop-ups, creating a translucent look inspired by the Vision Pro headset. This change will eventually affect all Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch. Designers interviewed by WIRED expressed mixed feelings. While many praised the fresh, visually striking aesthetic, several raised concerns about readability, especially for users with visual impairments or in bright lighting conditions. Some designers, like Allan Yu and Josh Puckett, suggested that the transparency might be excessive and hope Apple will refine the effect for better accessibility. Others, such as Serhii Popov, appreciate the modern look and believe it could enhance user comfort, particularly on larger devices like iPads. Technical admiration for the effect was also noted, but some, like Adam Whitcroft, worry that the visual complexity could distract from usability. Despite these concerns, most designers remain optimistic that Apple will improve the interface before its full release. The update marks Apple’s first major UI overhaul in a decade, signaling a shift toward more expressive, dynamic digital experiences.
