Communications Authority Sets 2026 Minimum Standards for Phones and Tablets in Kenya

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has released the 2026 technical specifications that all mobile phones, feature phones, and tablets must meet before they can be sold or used in Kenya. These regulations aim to ensure safety, quality, and accessibility for all users. Key requirements include minimum battery performance of eight hours talk time and 24 hours standby, USB-C charging with a detachable cable, and compliance with Kenya’s 3-pin Type G plugs. Devices must support 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G frequency bands, and adhere to strict limits on radio frequency power, radiated emissions, and electrical safety. Additional standards cover the use of non-hazardous materials, restricting substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium, and enforce accessibility features for persons with disabilities. This includes screen readers, real-time text, visual notifications, large touch targets, and compatibility with assistive technologies. CA Kenya will periodically review these standards to align with emerging technologies and best practices. Manufacturers and sellers are expected to follow these specifications to guarantee consumer safety, efficient device performance, and inclusivity. These measures also help manage environmental impact and electromagnetic compatibility of devices in the country.
